What counts as a "free" AI tool in 2026
Most "free AI tools" lists are misleading. They count 14-day trials as free, or tools that ask for your credit card "just for verification" and bill silently after a few generations. We don't.
A tool earns the Free tag in this catalogue only if it has a permanent free tier with no card required, you can use it indefinitely without paying or being asked to pay. A tool earns the Freemium tag if the free tier is usable for a real workflow (not just a demo) but more features or higher quotas require a paid plan.
Both are honest categories. The 0 fully-free tools below are great for anything where you don't need pro features. The 0 freemium tools cover everything else, start free, upgrade only if and when you hit the wall.

Free AI tools, frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI tool in 2026?+
Our top free picks are listed above, ranked by category.
Are these AI tools really free, or just free trials?+
Tools tagged "Free" have a permanent free tier with no credit card required. Tools tagged "Freemium" have a free tier plus paid plans that unlock more features or higher quotas. We label both, 0 are fully free, 0 are freemium.
How do free AI tools make money?+
Most freemium AI tools use the free tier as a customer-acquisition channel, they cap usage (number of generations, model quality, or speed) and charge for higher limits. A few are funded by enterprise contracts and offer a generous free tier as a public good. Fully-free tools without paid plans usually rely on open-source contributions or are model demos from larger labs.
Do I need to give a credit card for these free tools?+
Tools listed under "Free" do not require a credit card. Tools listed under "Freemium" usually don't either, but a few do, check each tool's signup flow before testing. We flag any "free" tier that requires a card in the tool's detail page editor's verdict.
Which categories have the most free AI tools?+
Coding, chat assistants, and image generation typically have the most free options because the underlying model costs have dropped most.
Are open-source AI tools listed here?+
Yes when they meet our review criteria (active maintenance, working setup, real users). We don't separate open-source from proprietary, what matters for our ranking is whether the tool actually works for your job.
